HIV And AIDS Symptoms

By Shari Evans

Millions of people are currently infected by HIV and have contracted AIDS worldwide. Unfortunately, the numbers of the infected are continuously increasing due to unawareness as the symptoms are minor and are often missed during the first stages. Everything starts with HIV infection which is communicable by unprotected sexual intercourse, blood transfusions, sharing of injection needles with an infected person, birth giving and breast feeding. Though there is no known cure for HIV, treatment and medications are available and if they have been taken during its early stages, it can possibly lengthen your life. Knowing the symptoms that may occur is important for early detection.

Symptoms on Different HIV Stages

The early symptoms of HIV are usually occurring on the first two months of being infected. In some cases, it can be asymptomatic during this early state. On the initial stage of infection, flu like symptoms can be noticed such as fever, headache, rashes, swollen lymph nodes and colds. If you suspect that you have been in contact with the virus because of the symptoms, you can talk to doctor and undergo a blood test. Common blood tests show positive results if the exposure to HIV had happened 12 weeks prior the test.

The second stage of HIV is peaceful and the person affected will continue to appear healthy. No symptoms will appear and this is a stage that could deceive and infect a lot of people. It will last for up to 10 years and it could also last for only a few months. The third stage is the symptomatic stage of HIV where in lymph nodes would appear on different parts of the body. The person will still look healthy and this is how it will go until AIDS starts to affect the person's systems.

Symptoms of AIDS

Years after contracting the HIV infection comes the onset of AIDS. This is a fatal condition that death may come several months after. People who have AIDS are experiencing fatigue, night sweats, low-grade fevers, rashes, genital ulcers, short-term memory loss, herpes infections, bacterial vaginosis, frequent yeast infections and loss of appetite which will lead to severe weight loss. This happens as damage in the immune system is becoming heavier as time goes by.

As time goes by, majority of the symptoms will be felt by the infected person. Some of those are seizures, vision loss, confusion, nausea, vomiting, white spots in the oral cavity and more infections. Due to a devastated and extremely weak immune system, your body will be prone to different kinds of diseases and complications. These are known as opportunistic infections that attack when a body is no longer capable of protecting itself. Cancers, pneumonia, leukemia, painful tumors and other deadly conditions may develop.
